Some 250 species share the zoo’s 100-acre grounds, from bongo, cheetah and flamingo to sitatunga, tiger and warthog.
Particularly popular attractions include the zoo’s Tropical World — a giant glasshouse filled with plants and animals you would normally only see in a tropical rainforest — and the World of Lemurs, where the zoo’s beautiful Madagascan lemurs enjoy life in what used to be the kitchen garden of Marwell House. Get an underwater view of Marwell’s twenty-five Humboldt penguins in Penguin World, and step into the Heart of Africa section to visit the zoo’s porcupines, gazelles, monkeys and giraffes.
There’s also a great view over the entire zoo and the Hampshire countryside in which it is set from the 30-metre walkway into the giraffe paddock.
The zoo hosts regular special events, and daily Keeper Encounters offer a rare opportunity to meet the people who know Marwell’s animals best of all: the zookeepers.
Marwell Zoological Park has welcomed visitors since 1972, when it was set up by conservation John Knowles. Today, Knowles’ original goal of protection of saving animals from extinction continues to guide the zoo’s extensive global conservation projects.
